Remembrance of War

By Mary Bone

He served with valor
as the enemy advanced.
Shrapnel wounds were a reminder
of suicide bombers.
His memories kept him awake
in the middle of the night.
The screams and smells,
surrounded him as the ship was sinking.
He was a survivor,
but, the nightmares never left him.
